Description
Dyalli Leso reimagines the geometric ornamentation that inspired Dyalli 02 through the timeless format of the East African leso. The design draws inspiration from carved Swahili doors, traditional architecture, furniture, and craft traditions that have shaped the East African coast for generations. Their bold geometric forms and repeating rhythms create a pattern that feels rooted in heritage while embracing a contemporary aesthetic.
The journey began with research. I explored these traditional ornaments and the stories they tell. As I learned more about their history, I became fascinated by the way simple geometric shapes could express craftsmanship, identity, and cultural memory. That discovery became the foundation of the design.
Next came sketching. Different layouts, repeating motifs, and compositions were explored until the pattern found its rhythm. The strongest ideas were then refined digitally. Each motif was carefully redrawn into clean geometric forms while preserving the character of the original ornaments.
Finally, the motifs were arranged into a seamless repeat. Every element was carefully positioned so the pattern would flow naturally across the leso. The result is a design that feels balanced, timeless, and full of movement.
At the centre of the leso is the Swahili proverb “Wawili wakipendana adui hana nafasi,” meaning “When two people love one another, an enemy has no place.” The proverb celebrates love, unity, and trust. It reminds us that strong relationships can overcome challenges. It also connects the pattern to the storytelling tradition that has made the East African leso a cherished cultural textile.
Whether worn, gifted, or displayed, Dyalli Leso celebrates African craftsmanship and contemporary design. It honours East African heritage while bringing traditional geometric ornamentation into modern everyday life.
