UndaMeta FAQs
UndaMeta is a marketplace for African-inspired surface pattern design and fabrics. We are a platform that actively connects textile print designers, fabric makers and buyers. We partner with independent designers to market and sell their repeat patterns, adaptable to any surface. Currently, we specialize in printing these designs on fabrics for diverse applications.
UndaMeta went live on February 20, 2023, thanks to funding from the African Hub for Sustainable Creative Economies (AHSCE) and the University of Nairobi, amoung others.
Surface pattern design is the art of creating repeating designs for a wide range of manufactured products. These patterns can be drawn or visualized by hand and applied manually, or they can be digitally printed for production. They appear everywhere—on wallpaper, wrapping paper, upholstery, fabric, apparel, and even flooring. Essentially, it’s the visual detail that brings life to everyday surfaces.
Despite its global presence, digital surface pattern design is largely dominated by Western and Eastern aesthetics, with African-inspired patterns remaining underrepresented. Our platform aims to change that by providing a space for African designers to showcase their unique patterns.
We work with talented artists skilled in print techniques and 2D computer-aided design, enabling them to sell their repeat patterns through a seamless digital marketplace. Unlike mass production, we operate on a print-on-demand model, ensuring that each order is custom-printed with minimal waste. This allows customers to shop for authentic African-inspired designs while providing designers with passive income opportunities, ensuring that Africa’s rich artistic heritage is both seen and valued worldwide.
Traditionally, African textiles held deep cultural significance, and were often used for social, political, and ceremonial purposes. They served, as a powerful medium of communication and artistic expression. Historically, textiles were even used as a form of currency in some regions. Today, they continue to be an integral part of African identity and are gaining global recognition for their vibrant colours, intricate patterns, and unique cultural stories.
African textiles incorporate African art, symbols, semiotics, objects, scenery, philosophy, lifestyle, myths, customs, stories, literature, events, and all that pertains to life in Africa. It is one that may not be entirely African but is predominantly African. They embrace the translation of what life is for the person who is fundamentally African in their outlook to life. They represent all that is intangible and tangible in African culture such as music, dance, food, nature, fashion, politics, education, weather.
That which is African can be expressed in any art genre, from Realism, to Expressionism, and Impressionism, The Abstract, Pop Art, Bauhaus, Surrealism, Romanticism, Fauvism, Dadaism, Cubism, Constructivism, and Futurism as well as The De Stijl style can be used among many others. Your textiles can be expressed using a composite of these if that is what appeals to you. On the converse, the treasure trove of textiles you design, can be inspired by African art styles such as Tinga Tinga, or Makonde carvings. They can be informed by the art produced by personalities such as Twins Seven Seven, Cheri Samba, Wangechi Mutu, Ibrahim El-Salahi, Joy Adamson and Yinka Shonibare among a diversity of other Africans of every spectrum of human colour.
Your textiles will tell the African story. They will hark back to the past, be domiciled in the present, or move into the future or if you prefer, span all the eras you choose to live in. Simply endeavour to express your textiles in their full living, breathing form. Remember, it does not have to be designed by an African to be African, however, if an African designs it, it does not make it African.
What is African to you? If you are still baffled, confused, or discombobulated by all this, email us for a discussion on what you can submit. Hopefully, we will not confuse each other further. All the best in your African design journey… Join us, the adventure has just begun.

All UndaMeta Lesos feature traditional borders (pindo) and bold, vibrant prints designed by independent artists. Our industrially printed lesos typically feature three colours, including key (black) and two spot colours. However, some contemporary designs may not include borders but still adhere to this three-colour principle.
A pair of lesos is called a gora and is joined along the width of the fabric. On the UndaMeta Leso Edition, industrially printed lesos have a minimum order quantity (MOQ) of 2,500 individual pieces (bulk print). Orders are delivered cut and packed as a gora within 14 working days.

- A high-resolution artwork file created in Procreate, Adobe Illustrator, or Adobe Photoshop. Our platform accepts PDF uploads, or designers can submit their artwork via WeTransfer to info@undameta.com.
Design Review Process
During the design review phase, we check for the following:
- Technical Specifications: Does the design meet our technical requirements? (See the end of the FAQs for details.)
- Colour Accuracy: Are the colours applied correctly?
- Seamless Repeat: Does the pattern tile properly, or are there visible gaps or misalignments?
- Quality Control: Are there any noticeable errors or inconsistencies?
- Print Gaps: Are there unintended white lines where the motif connects?
- Authenticity: Has the design been plagiarized? We only accept original, authentic designs.
Print Review Process
Before printing, we conduct another round of checks to ensure:
- Print-Ready Files: Is the high-resolution file correctly formatted for printing?
- Pattern Continuity: Does the repeat pattern have any skips or errors? We make in-house adjustments if necessary, such as resizing to fit different textile widths while maintaining proportions.
- Fabric Accuracy: Based on the client’s order, is the design printed on the correct fabric?
- Colour Registration: Are the colours accurately aligned?
- Order Accuracy: Has the correct meterage been printed?
Our goal is to maintain high-quality standards while ensuring that every design is print-ready and visually flawless.
