Its black-and-white checkerboard background symbolises the racial divide of the colonial era—rigid, structured, and intentionally separating. Against this backdrop, golden cowrie shells become the central motif, referencing the currency, wealth, and economic systems that fuelled the transatlantic slave trade.
The placement of the cowries is deliberate: most sit within the white squares, representing the concentration of power and resources, while a few drift into the black squares to hint at the limited freedoms and gains allowed to the oppressed.
