Dyalli 01

From $ 13.40 per meter

My work draws from rich African heritage and traditional visual symbols, reinterpreting them into contemporary patterns with simple, bold geometric forms. Although African textiles are known for vivid colour, I wanted to explore more unusual combinations in my patterns.

Two Adinkra symbols were used to create the Dyalli 01 pattern: Adinkrahene (“king”), representing greatness, authority, leadership, and charisma; and Dwennimmen (ram’s horn), symbolising humility and strength. These symbols have simple, abstract, and visually appealing shapes that resonate even with those unfamiliar with their deeper history. In the Dyalli 01 pattern, the symbols are presented without black outlines or traditional Adinkra colour palettes, instead using two compatible colours to create a deliberate departure from the familiar.

My approach to pattern design is inspired by two established brands: the Finnish brand Marimekko, whose designer Maija Isola playfully experimented with colour and scale in the 1960s; and the Nigerian brand DyeLab, known for its simple abstract symbols and strong colours.

Description

Dyalli 01 began with a simple question: How can traditional African symbols be reimagined for contemporary textiles while preserving the stories they carry? That question led me to the Adinkra symbols of the Akan people of Ghana. I explored their history, meanings, and their role as visual expressions of wisdom, values, and everyday life.

During the research, two symbols stood out. The first was Adinkrahene, often called the “king” of the Adinkra symbols. It represents leadership, greatness, authority, and charisma. The second was Dwennimmen, the ram’s horns. This symbol reminds us that true strength is always balanced with humility. Although both symbols are simple in form, they continue to carry powerful messages today.

With these ideas in mind, I began sketching different layouts and compositions. I experimented with scale, rhythm, and repetition until the design felt balanced. From there, the sketches were refined digitally. Each motif was carefully redrawn into clean geometric forms while preserving the character of the original symbols.

The colour palette was developed alongside the artwork. Instead of using traditional Adinkra colours, I explored softer contemporary combinations. This choice gave Dyalli 01 a distinctive identity while allowing the symbolism to remain at the heart of the design.

Finally, the motifs were arranged into a seamless repeat. Every element was carefully positioned so the design would flow naturally across fabric and other surfaces. The result is Dyalli 01, a contemporary African geometric pattern that honours the wisdom of Adinkra traditions while presenting them through a fresh and modern design language.

Whether used for fashion, interiors, stationery, or lifestyle products, Dyalli 01 celebrates leadership, humility, and the enduring power of African visual storytelling. It is a design that connects cultural heritage with contemporary surface pattern design.
